Description of boron

Boron is a trace mineral that works in conjunction with calcium, vitamin D and magnesium for healthy bones that grow strong and heal quickly after fractures. Boron is credited with the ability to heighten the body's absorption of calcium and magnesium and prevent its loss through urine. Especially for older women boron is an important part of their fight against osteoporosis and bone loss. Boron also has a positive impact on joints, alleviating inflammation and pain due to arthritis. People suffering from osteoporosis and arthritis can benefit from increased intake of boron either from a multivitamin or supplements known as sodium borate, boron chelates or sodium tetraborate decahydrate. Boron can also be found in fruits and vegetables including, apples, beans, pears, peaches, dates and grapes. Boron has not been highly studied and doses between 3 and 9 milligrams are considered safe higher doses are not recommended. Side effects including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can occur with extremely high doses. There are no known drug interactions with boron and other nutrients or drugs.
