Description of acidophilus
ACIDOPHILUS
Acidophilus is a "friendly" bacteria found in the intestinal tract that is available in a supplemental form and
has been used to treat a number of problems including food allergies, diarrhea, and bowel disorders. The
use of antibiotics can kill off not only the "bad" bacteria but also the beneficial bacteria that our body needs
to function properly. When the delicate balance of bacteria and diet are interfered with health problems can
arise. Acidophilus hinders the growth of yeast, E. coli and other harmful bacteria, which are the culprits in
some of these health problems. It also plays an important role protecting women from yeast infections,
easing arthritis, aiding brain functioning, and blocking free radicals.
Some suggestions for preventing an overpopulation of "bad" bacteria are: eating plenty of fiber, and
avoiding sugar, alcohol, antibiotics, and stress can help too. After deciding to take a supplement, choose
wisely. Always look for a "sell by" date and you may want to purchase supplements that have been
refrigerated or kept in a cool location. The supplement is available in a powder form or a number of
different vehicles like milk, soy and rice.
Individuals already under a doctor's care and pregnant or nursing women should consult a physician prior
to taking this supplement or any supplement to avoid possible side effects.
