Description of chromium picolinate

Chromium is vital to the production of insulin, the substance that directly regulates blood sugar, which is turned into energy by the body. If chromium levels are either too high or too low it effects the body's ability to move the blood sugar into the cells. High insulin levels indicate diabetes and low levels can result in a build up of cholesterol in the blood vessels. Chromium's contribution to the metabolism has made it a good weight-loss aid and has been used to treat adults diagnosed with diabetes. Chromium has also been used to treat heart disease, hypoglycemia and alcoholism. Some studies indicate that chromium can also improve muscle tone and burn fat in addition to regulating blood sugar and cholesterol. Chromium can be found in foods we eat including, brewers yeast, beef, chicken, clams, vegetables, grape juice, wheat germ, molasses and corn oil. Chromium can be depleted by eating too many refined grains since the refining process strips away most of the naturally occurring chromium. Also, athletes and expectant mothers may be low on chromium because of the amount that's used during exercise or pregnancy. Chromium supplements are available and some sources even reflect that many people are deficient in chromium. Chromium citrate and chromium picolinate are two suggested chromium supplements. Chromium is not recommended for children and or in high doses because it can become toxic to the liver and kidneys.
