Description of carotenoid complex
CARTENOID COMPLEX
Cartenoids are plant pigments that provide cancer protection in addition to many other valuable benefits.
Beta-carotene is the most popular of the cartenoids, but similar to the way B complex vitamins must work
together for optimal benefits so must the cartenoids. Taking just one of the cartenoids, for example taking
only beta-carotene, would not provide nearly the health benefits of taking cartenoid complex since beta-
carotene relies on other cartenoids in order to function effectively. The cartenoid complex includes beta-
carotene, which is known for its ability to ward off cancer also has tremendous potential to fight heart
disease and artery problems. In addition, beta-carotene boosts the immune system since the body converts
a portion of it into vitamin A, an effective infection buster. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are two additional
cartenoids that protect our eyes from free radicals, harmful sun rays and cataracts. Lycopene is found in
tomatoes and is a great friend of the heart. It can prevent cholesterol buildup in the arteries and ranks with
beta-carotene in its ability to prevent cancers of the prostate, lung, breast and endometrium.
Cartenoids are fat soluble substances and should ideally be taken with fat in order to effectively be
absorbed into the body. Cartenoids can be found easily, remember they're pigments, so look for bright
colored foods like tomatoes, watermelon, dark green leafy vegetables, quash, carrots, and pink grapefruit.
Cartenoids are not toxic and can be consumed in larger quantities, unlike vitamin A. Large doses may
result in yellowing of the hands which is a harmless side effect from the pigmentation. Dosage can range
from 10,000 international units or more depending on the desired effect. Pregnant or nursing women
should consult a physician prior to taking this or any supplement.
